Reaper #2939: Viking Girl [my title: Æsa of the North] [11 of 14]
This is for round one of "Iron Painter 4" (theme: "The Dead of Winter").
I had two ideas that I considered seriously for this round: this one; and Wyrd Miniature's Rasputina - The Ice Witch summoning some undead. I did not think that I would have enough time for the multiple miniature approach, so I went with this one.
In Iron Painter 3, I tried getting creative with the theme, but that was a bit hit-and-miss for me. For this Iron Painter, I am starting-out taking a safer approach with the theme. Winter is obviously represented, and the blood takes care of the rest.
Iron Painter again pushed me to do some things that I would not normally have done. I have wanted to try snow on the base of miniatures for awhile, but had not gotten around to it until this round of Iron Painter. I also tried something new with the NMM on the sword. I used both warm and cold grays (the dark areas in warm grays, and the lighter areas in cold grays), and am pleased with th results. I also tried to keep the color of her clothes "cold" as much as possible.
I was also in the World of Miniatures "Chaotic Creations" painting contest at the same time, so I did not have the time to do as much with either miniature as I would have liked (free-hand, touch-ups, etc.). Still, I like the way that this miniature turned-out.
I used a Groundforge Dark-War Slate 40 base for this miniature, and Games Workshop Modelling Snow. I had wanted to use the Techstar snow, but could not get it in time for the contest. I used Tamiya Clear Red and Smoke for the blood.
I entered this miniature into Connecticon 2008's miniature painting contest. It won 1st place in the "Best Single" category and "Best of Show".
